Nicholas C. LePham Citizenship and Public Service Award

Nicholas ChiLinh LePham is a graduate of Tufts University, Boston, Massachusetts, with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Mr. LePham was born in Houston, TX, and spent his childhood there before moving abroad. However, he has always considered Houston his home and would like to give back to the community. He is also a passionate political activist, whose past experience includes work on the Presidential campaign of US Senator John F. Kerry (MA), the Congressional campaign of US Rep. Nick Lampson (TX-Sugar Land), the Hillary Clinton for President Committee (NY) and the Center for American Progress. More recently, he co-founded the National Organization of Vietnamese Leaders (NOVAL) where he is the National Board’s President and currently works at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the government agency that ensures consumer financial products and services work for all American.

On February 4th, 2015, the hit comedy series Fresh Off The Boat premiered on ABC. The show is based on the memoirs of Eddie Huang, the American born son of Taiwanese immigrants, and chronicles his family's pursuit of the American Dream. This would be the first time in twenty years (and second time ever) that an Asian American family is the main cast on a network sitcom, sparking a conversation about the role of Asian American Pacific Islanders' (AAPI) in the media. What kind of social, political, or economic impact, if any at all, do you think this development has had on you personally, the AAPI community, or American society at large? Feel free to use any examples from this show or any other media portrayals of AAPIs to make your case.
